Islington Council is proud to lead the way in creating a cleaner, healthier borough for everyone, driven by our vision ‘For A More Equal Future’ where sustainability and fairness go hand in hand. Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, and we are taking bold, practical steps to reduce emissions and protect our environment for generations to come.

Across all services and departments, from housing to transport, waste management to parks and open spaces, we are working collaboratively to cut carbon emissions and improve air quality. Our housing teams are retrofitting homes with energy-efficient measures, reducing fuel poverty while lowering carbon footprints, and our waste and recycling services have expanded food waste collections and introduced innovative reuse schemes to help residents make greener choices every day. Planning policies embed sustainability into new developments, ensuring green spaces, biodiversity, and low-carbon designs are at the heart of Islington’s future, while community engagement programmes empower residents and businesses to join us on this journey.

Transport is a major contributor to emissions, and we have taken decisive action to change that. Islington Council has successfully transitioned 150 vehicles in our fleet to electric, with a long-term goal of a fully electric fleet by 2030, saving over 3,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually. This investment not only cuts emissions but also improves air quality, making our streets safer and healthier for everyone. We are expanding cycle lanes, improving walking routes, and supporting public transport to reduce reliance on cars, while continuing to roll out electric vehicle charging infrastructure to make EV adoption easier for residents and businesses. Our commitment to cleaner transport is central to our ambition to become a net zero borough by 2030, and borough-wide emissions have already fallen by 26.9% since 2018, including a 16% drop in electricity emissions and 9.4% reduction in gas emissions between 2022 and 2023. We are planting 600 net new trees annually, aiming to increase tree canopy cover from 25% to 30% by 2050, and creating 1.5 hectares of new green space by 2030. We are also proud that Islington has held the title of Healthier Streets Borough for five consecutive years, reflecting our leadership in creating safer, cleaner, and more sustainable streets for all. Together, through these ambitious targets and achievements, we are building a borough that is fairer, greener, and more resilient, ensuring every resident benefits from a cleaner, healthier environment and For A More Equal Future.
