New Prius returns 90+ MPG, claims Toyota

News

Toyota has published economy figures suggesting the new fourth generation hybrid Prius will offer the best efficiency levels yet, with CO2 emission from 70g/km and a quoted combined full economy figure of 94.2 MPG.

The new Prius has undergone a number of improvements to help achieve these statistics, including the new platform’s lightweight but stiff chassis which reduces strain on the hybrid powertrain.

The system also features a new 1.8 litre VVTi petrol engine, which Toyota claims to be the world’s most thermally efficient. The engine produces 97 bhp, which when combined with a 53 kW electric motor, brings the combined power output for the Prius to 120 bhp.

This combination allows a 0-62 mph time of 10.6 seconds and a top speed of 112 mph. Furthermore, improvements to the engine’s efficiency and the creation of more energy dense batteries act to improve the Prius’ emissions from 89 g/km CO2 in the previous model to 72.4 MPG.

Fuel consumption is reduced further by a more aerodynamic body, helping the Prius propel through the air with less resistance. While the Prius is set lower than before, there is more space internally with the nickel-metal hydride battery pack now located beneath the rear seats rather than in the boot.

The car’s reported performance and economy figures are still subject to change depending on final homologation and the market, though it is likely any changes will be minimal.
