Reading council bid for electric car street charging trial

News

Reading Borough Council is waiting on the results of a bid to train new street charging technology in the town.

According to InYourArea, if the government are given the go-ahead, electric vehicle owners in the area can put their names forward to test out the charging trial.

At the moment, drivers have to install charging points in their drives, which rules out a lot of people in Reading.

The plan was revealed during a meeting of the authority's Traffic Management Sub-Committee earlier this month when Green Party leader Coucillor Rob White said: "Recently while out on the doorstep I have noticed an increase in people with drives charging electric vehicles.

"Much of Reading, however, is terraced housing with no drive and on street parking."

He added there were "a number of companies" which had "developed innovative solutions" for on-street charging, using lamposts as a power source and asked if the council would agree to pilot this technology.
