Khan seeks to bring forward zero-emission zones to 2020

The Mayor of London is planning to bring forward zero-emission zones in some town centres from 2025 to 2020, as part of his environmental strategy.

The strategy, which was presented to the London Assembly for consideration before being published in the coming weeks, include ways to make London a “zero-carbon city by 2050.”

Other measures in the strategy include making buildings more energy efficient, reducing food waste and increasing the use of renewable energy, such as solar.

For the first time, this strategy brings together approaches to every aspect of London’s environment in one document.

London is expected to be legally compliant with nitrogen dioxide (NO2) limits by 2025 but Sadiq wants to achieve legal limits well before this and adopt tighter World Health Organization recommended air quality guidelines.

Khan said however that achieving legal limits earlier is only possible if government supports his plans, gives him additional resources and powers, and access to clean air funding.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “This strategy sets out my plans to clean up our filthy air with bold new air quality measures, tackle waste and promote cleaner energy so we can make London a healthier city that adapts to the impacts of climate change.
