BMW i displays future mobility solutions at CES

BMW has has showcased a number of new technologies at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), including a new version of its i8 Spider Concept car.

A highlight of its exhibition is the BMW’s Air Touch, which utilises gesture control systems to allow the driver to control the car’s displays with simple movements, removing the risk of distraction and the need to look down at buttons and dials.

Currently gesture control systems operate via finger movements which can be used to accept phone calls or change the volume of music. However, the new system includes a number of sensors installed in the dashboard which allows three dimensional control of a large panorama display.

Furthermore, the main information displayed for the driver is through the Head-Up Display (HUD) or via a 3D display from the instrument cluster located behind the steering wheel. The vehicle also includes a large screen on the dashboard which enables intuitive web connectivity and systems such as satellite navigation.

BMW’s demonstration will also feature examples of its increased connectivity. BMW Connected currently includes properties which enable the car to be pre-conditioned to more advanced safety, security and lifestyle elements. The owner can use a smartphone, smartwatch or tablet in order to access the content of their calendar, the weather and traffic forecast, all available through a mobility mirror.

Another key feature BMW is due to showcase is its camera systems, which serve both security and practicality purposes. As well as identifying and alerting the owner to when the car has been hit, the cameras are aimed at replacing or supplementing traditional mirrors.

The i3 interior mirror view is overlaid with images from a camera located on the roof which allows a larger field of vision. The i3 also includes Gesture Control Parking technology, which uses the car’s automatic parking features by gesturing what you wish the car to do.
