Audi plans to fit solar cells to future electric vehicles

Car maker Audi has announced that it plans to fit future electric vehicles with solar cells to power systems such as air conditioning and seat heaters.

Audi has decided to team up with AltaDevices - a firm which makes thin solar panels - in order to build the first working prototype.

It is hoped that it will arrive by early next year.

Audi plans to cover the entire roof surface of future EVs with the power cells to generate recyclable energy.

For now, Audi’s main aim is to have a system that will extend the driving range of their EVs. If solar energy can power the car’s non-essentials, the car will be left with more power for long haul drives.

Audi board of management member for procurement, Dr. Bernd Martens, commented: “The range of electric cars plays a decisive role for our customers. Together with Alta Devices and Hanergy, we plan to install innovative solar technology in our electric cars that will extend their range and is also sustainable.

“ At a later stage, solar energy could directly charge the traction battery of Audi electric vehicles.”
