Toyota could be developing a new solid-state battery EV model

Toyota is developing an electric car powered by a new battery which aims to increase driving range and reduce charging time, the Chunichi Shimbun daily has reported.

The new electric model is set to use all-solid-state batteries, which will allow it to be recharged within just a few minutes, according to Reuters.

Toyota’s current electric vehicles use lithium-ion batteries and take around 20 to 30 minutes to charge with a range of around 185 - 250 miles.

The Chunichi Shimbun daily also stated that the new model could be sold in Japan from as early as 2022.

Solid-state batteries differ to lithium-ion as they use solid electrolytes instead of liquid, which makes them safer.

Toyota spokeswoman Kayo Doi said the company would not comment on specific product plans but added that it aimed to commercialise all-solid-state batteries by the early 2020s.
