Second stage of grants available to grow hydrogen transport

News

A second stage of funding to support the development of hydrogen for transport has become opened up for applications.

Industry and local authorities can apply for a portion of the £14m Hydrogen Transport Programme (HTP), which will go towards growing the amount of hydrogen refuelling stations (HRS), alongside the deployment of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).

The first stage of funding awarded £8.8 million to a successful project that will bring nearly 200 new FCEVs to the UK, alongside additional HRS and upgrades to existing refuelling infrastructure.

The second stage of funding will allow additional larger capacity HRS to be built, whilst optimising the utilisation of these and existing stations by providing funding to support the purchase of vehicle fleets that can be refuelled at all HRS.

The size and placement of the stations will be carefully considered, as well as the strength of the links that new stations have with the fleets to be operated, and the likelihood – and ease – of other vehicles using the new stations. Consideration will also be given to how much hydrogen the vehicles will use and how regular the demand will be.

The ability to increase hydrogen capacity and number of dispensers will be taken into account, as will the cost and environmental footprint of the hydrogen.

This funding round will close on 5 November 2018.
