Charging six EVs in close proximity could “overload” the grid, think tank warns

A new report by think tank Green Alliance shows that the UK energy system cannot cope with the demand for electric vehicles.

Green Alliance say that the UK’s energy system isn’t prepared for the growing number of consumers choosing to buy small-scale energy technologies like electric vehicles.

The group went on to say that the consequences could be serious and without change, “just six electric cars charging in close proximity at peak time could overload the grid and disrupt the local power supply”.

The think tank believes that the government needs to intervene by transforming distribution network operators into distribution system operators to “actively integrate EVs and solar in a smart network”.

They also believe that “small scale technologies should be enabled to provide system flexibility, for instance through smart charging of EVs”.
