Islington Council installs first electric vehicle charger

The first on-street charge point in Islington has been installed and can charge a vehicle in 30 minutes.

The rapid charging device is located in Sheringham Road at the junction of Lough Road, and can give an 80 per cent charge in half an hour - meaning drivers will be able to re-power their car during their lunch breaks.

There is set to be a major roll out of charging units across Islington over the next year, with 100 roadside charging points set to be installed. The next point is expected to be put in place before the end of the financial year.

Councillor Claudia Webbe, Islington Council’s executive member for environment and transport, commented: “I’m really pleased to launch Islington’s first on-street rapid charger which marks the next phase in the development Islington’s electric charging network.

“To use the on-street charging points, residents need to buy an electric vehicle charging point permit. This costs £67 for the first year and then £20 a year afterwards.

“Electric vehicle owners will also be consulted on the possibility of setting up a pay-as-you-go system to pay for the electricity used.”
