The Department for Transport (DfT) has confirmed that the trial of driverless technology in trucks will begin the UK starting in 2016.

Plans are currently being finalised for the trials of autonomous trucks, which will be conducted with help from Highways England. They are expected to start on track, before moving on to road trials, and it is believed the technology could reduce fuel consumption by up to 20 per cent.

A DfT spokesman told CommercialMotor.com: “The department is in the process of planning trials of HGV platoons to investigate their potential use on the UK infrastructure and their effects on UK traffic.

“We anticipate these trials will be conducted in conjunction with Highways England, vehicle manufacturers and the haulage industry, starting in 2016.”
