Government to support electric cars for a greener transport system

Coalition government to accelerate development of a smart electricity grid.

The new government coalition of Conservatives and Liberal Deomocrats are showing support for electric cars, as part of measures implemented to establish an economy that is low carbon and eco-friendly.

The Tories have strong support of zero-emission electric and low carbon plug-in hybrid vehicles and are also to accelerate the development of a smart (electricity) grid, to start an electric vehicle revolution.

This is the first time that legislation will be used to expand the recharging network across the UK, although it is not yet clear if this will be implemented at national or local level.

Signs of the government's support, as previously stimulated by Labour's Plug-In Car scheme, where motorists will receive up to £5,000 to buy an ultra-low carbon car, may further increase interest in electric cars.

The support for electric vehicles is part of a larger programme to make the UK's transport system greener, and also extends to rail and air travel.
