Five year programme to save 150,000 tonnes of CO2e.
Stagecoach Group has launched a new sustainability strategy, Revolution in the Way We Travel, to further reduce carbon emissions from its UK and North America transport operations.
The transport group is backing up the new strategy with an £11 million investment programme and a range of targets for its bus and rail businesses.
Stagecoach Group is targeting an overall reduction of 8 per cent in buildings CO2e emissions and a cut of 3 per cent in annual fleet transport CO2e emissions.
It is estimated the new five-year programme, from 2009-10 to 2013-14, will save nearly 150,000 tonnes of CO2e, with the Group’s annual emissions reduced by around 40,000 tonnes CO2e by April 2014.
Stagecoach’s carbon reduction initiatives will include introduction of eco-driving techniques across 14,000 bus drivers in the UK, driver training measures and the introduction of energy wardens at East Midlands Trains and communication plans to raise awareness and encourage greener workplace practices.
Also, roll-out of the EnviroxTM fuel additive at the Group’s Canadian bus operations, new procurement policies and buildings manuals and continuing to source a significant proportion of its electricity requirement from renewables, including electricity generated from small-scale hydro, on-shore wind and biomass.
Stagecoach Group’s sustainability strategy is focused on meeting and exceeding regulatory obligations, investing in more fuel efficient vehicles, using alternative, renewable fuels, training employees in more efficient driving techniques.
Also, saving energy at offices and depots, conserving and recycling water, reducing and recycling waste, reducing business travel, and providing affordable bus and rail travel.
