Green motorway service station in for planning permission

Station to emit a fifth of the carbon dioxide as normal service stations.

A new, greener motorway service station which aims to emit a fifth of the carbon dioxide of normal motorway services has been designed for the Cotswolds.

Designed to ‘knit’ into the landscape so that even the petrol station cannot be seen from the road, it will emit less carbon dioxide thanks to a kitchen garden, the creation of habitats for wildlife, and the use of locally sourced Douglas fir as the building material.

There will be no franchises. Instead businesses will sell fresh, locally sourced food made on the premises and locally produced art and crafts, helping the local economy and creating more jobs.

Architects Glenn Howells won the competition to design the service station which will be located between junctions 11 and 12 of the M5. The planning application is currently being considered by Stroud district council.
