Taking The Stress Out Of Managing A Greener Fleet

Andrew Franklin - Director, Public Sector for Europcar UK, highlights the benefits of modern mobility solutions for organisations under pressure to reduce emissions – and costs

Fleet and travel managers in public sector organisations are under relentless pressure to cut emissions whilst also keeping costs down. Managing a fleet of ageing vehicles can leave organisations struggling to achieve this goal. However, the need to make environmental improvements has to be balanced against financial strains. Will the cost efficiencies of the latest motoring technology outweigh the upfront financial burden of new vehicle acquisition?

The good news is that vehicle hire – in its many evolving forms - provides an immensely cost-effective way to tackle the emissions challenge. And new tools are being developed to make it easy for fleet and travel managers to access a range of flexible vehicle rental solutions that will both provide cost-effective options for employee travel plans, and enable safety and environmental objectives to be met – all from one portal.

Europcar One is the new mobility portal that not only gives fleet managers access to a wide range of transport options in one place, but delivers important environmental and cost advantages too. Providing direct access to what is one of the youngest fleets in the car hire market, Europcar One enables public sector organisations to drive down their emissions in order to meet their environmental targets, simply and efficiently.

With a publicly stated commitment to move its fleet to 5% electric by 2020, Europcar has been working with its manufacturer partners to integrate both electric and hybrid vehicles into its mainstream fleet for some time. Current fleet analysis shows that 55% of the fleet is considered low emission at less than 120 g/km and 12% of these vehicles have a CO2 emission of less than 100 g/km.

But vehicle rental by the day or longer isn’t the only answer for public sector organisations. In some cases access to a vehicle for just an hour or two is the most economic – and environmentally wise – solution. Which is why Europcar One also provides access to E-Car, the UK’s first entirely electric pay-per-use car club, offering public sector organisations huge savings in terms of both cost and environmental impact.

Operating across the UK, E-Car is helping public sector organisations - including universities, local authorities and housing associations - focus on more sustainable mobility solutions. Public sector organisations are not only able to meet CSR and environmental objectives, the E-Car model also brings cost savings, with an hourly rate said to be less than almost every other car club in the UK. In addition, it tackles user concerns about downtime charging as well as providing online vehicle management which enables users to analyse the journey data removing the pains of traditional fleet management.

The scheme also adds huge value to the local community, by offering an organisation’s fleet to local residents outside of business hours, thereby reducing the need for privately-owned vehicles, which in turn improves local air quality and addresses parking pressure and congestion issues. Alternatively, one of the options in the scheme is to offer a dedicated vehicle to an organisation.

At the other end of the spectrum, Europcar’s long-term rental solution – Advantage - with ‘Business Ready’ vehicles fitted with Bluetooth and Sat Nav helps organisations avoid the expense of upgrading ageing fleet. Featuring brand new vehicles, Advantage delivers the fuel efficiency and lower emissions of the latest motoring technology, without the investment of buying a new vehicle or committing to a multi-year lease.

Crucially, fleet managers need to be able to understand and analyse how the use of different mobility solutions is impacting financial and environmental targets. Europcar One delivers this insight through consolidated reporting and invoicing.

Europcar is committed to getting the right vehicle in the right place at the right time and that can be many things, from traditional car hire to car use by the hour. By bringing all Europcar’s services together, Europcar One empowers fleet and travel managers in the public sector to meet the wide range of demands and challenges facing them and their organisations.
